Flyet var på sin sædvanlige rute, fra [[Moskvas]] [[Sheremetyevo International Airport]] til [[Hong Kongs]] tidligere lufthavn Kai Tak. De fleste af passagerene var kinesiske forretningsfolk, som var på vej hjem efter et kig på gode forretningsmuligheder i Rusland.
Kaptajnen, Yaroslav Kudrinsky, som fløj flyet, havde taget sine to børn med på deres første internationale flyvetur. Aeroflot gavhavde rabatterdengag tilet piloternessærligt familierrabatsystem, som delod kunnepiloter flyvetage billigere.deres familiemedlemmer med, til lavere priser.

Shortly after, the flight path indicator changed to show they were in a holding pattern. This confused the pilots for nine seconds.

Though he and his co-pilot did regain control, their altitude by then was too low to recover, and the plane crashed.
