[[Helmand Provinsen|Helmand]] og [[Kandahar Provinsen|Kandahar]] provinserne i [[Afghanistan]] var i [[2009]] ramme om de værste '''koalitionsstyrke-tab''' siden [[krigen i Afghanistan]] begyndte i oktober [[2001]]. De to provinser er [[Taliban]]s [[borg|højborg]]. De blev første gang angrebet af amerikanske styrker i [[2005]], og fra begyndelsen af [[2006]] begyndte tropper fra [[Storbritannien]], [[Canada]], [[Holland]] og [[Danmark]] at ankomme. Danmark deltog med 280 mand under britisk ledelse. Fra medio [[2006]] havde [[NATO]] officielt overtaget kommandoen - første gang at denne organistation deltog i aktiv krigsførelse uden for [[Europa]]. De deltagende lande blev hurtigt involveret i de værste kampe som deres styrker havde været i siden [[2. verdenskrig|Anden Verdenskrig]]. I [[2007]] kom de danske styrker op på ca. 700 mand. Den [[2. juli]] [[2009]] blev to amerikanske [[bataljon]]er indsat i de to provinser, som led i den troppeforøgelse på 17.000 mand, som præsident [[Barack Obama]] havde besluttet sig for.
