Stormagternes prøvesprængninger af [[atomvåben]] i perioden 1945-80 med 520 gennemførte sprængninger i atmosfæren, var hovedårsagen til det radioaktive nedfald. Men også [[Tjernobylulykken]] sendte store mængder radioaktive stoffer ud i atmosfæren.
==Virkning==
Det radioaktive nedfald medfører typisk [[kræft]] - selv ved lave koncentrationer og lader til at gøre at børn bliver mindre intelligente.
