Biosyntesen af de forskellige molekyler (terpener, gibberelliner, cholesterol osv.) sker ikke direkte ud fra isopren, men via en kompleks række af reaktioner.
 
Isopren i [[Jordens atmosfære|atmosfæren]] (kan) reagere med visse stoffer og bliver i så fald til [[aerosol]]er og de dannede aerosoler er [[hygroskopisk]]e og laderer med til at danne [[Sky (meteorologi)|sky]]er og [[tåge]]. Det viser sig at mange [[landplante]]r danner store mængder isopren og derfor er/kan være ophav til en stor del af [[bioaerosol]]ererne.
