Under its transitional provisions, Sarney´s term continued until [[15. marts]] [[1990]]. Thus, Sarney became the first president to serve under the Constitution. In accordance with its rules, the first popular elections for president since the military coup were held in 1989, a final milestone in the restoration of the democratic freedoms in Brazil.
