Antallet af coliforme bakterier i menneskets tarm er ca. 10 gange så stort som antallet af menneskets celler. De coliforme bakterier har flere gavnlige funktioner i tarmen, bl. a. produktion af [[vitamin K]], men kan give infektioner andre steder i kroppen – f.eks. andre [[slimhinde]]r, hvis de utilsigtet kommer her. Nogle varianter som [[VTEC]] er patogene.
