I et vådområde ligger vandspejlet lige under jordoverfladen, i perioder med [[nedbør]] kan vådområdets vandspejl være over jordoverfladen. Man har opdaget at vådområder har oplagret store mængder carbon og fortsat er globale carbonafløb i jordklodens globale carbonregnskab. [[Carbondioxid]] trækkes ud af [[luft]]en via [[fotosyntese]]. Selv menneskelavede vådområder oplagrer carbon. Carbon bliver lagret i flere hundreder tusind år her. Selvom man medregner udslip af [[metan]] og dennes drivhuseffekt, er vådområder netto carbonoptagere.
