Dyrkningmetoden blev udviklet af de oprindelige amerikanske folkeslag i løbet af 5000-6000 år. [[Squash (grøntsag)|Squash]] var den første plante til at blive domestificeret i stenalderen af de amerikanske folkeslag, for cirka 8000-10000 år siden.
