Da Hormizd 2. døde i 309, blev han efterfulgt af sin søn Adur Narseh, der efter en kort regeringstid, der varede nogle få måneder, blev dræbt af medlemmer af adelsstanden.{{sfn|Tafazzoli|1983|p=477}} Disse blændede derefter Hormizd's anden søn,{{sfn|Al-Tabari|1991|p=50}} og fængslede den tredje (Hormizd, der severe flygtede til [[Romerriget]]).{{sfn|Shahbazi|2004|pp=461-462}} Tronen blev derfor forbeholdt det ufødte barn af Hormizd 2.'s kone Ifra Hormizd, der blev Shapur 2.
