Definition and explanation of VR

VR stands for Virtual Reality. It is a 3D immersive experience that places the user in the middle of a world surrounding them completely. Currently VR is only achievable with a VR headset, which the users can put on their head and look around, the picture will pan to the side of the user’s head is turning towards.

Definition and explanation of 3600 camera

A 3600 camera is also known as a omnidirectional camera which is able to take pictures and/or record its entire surroundings in a 3600 degree view. This makes it possible for the viewers, to choose the angle of the view themselves, by dragging the image/video with your mouse or - if using the cardboard and the sensors in their phones - turning their heads. Please see the picture of a room full of ballerinas in appendix 1.

3600 video is not the same as VR, even though it’s usually mistaken for being the same thing. The key difference is that in VR you control the experience, whereas in 3600 you are unable to make your own decisions.

“ In VR you control the experience; in 360 you’re simply along for the ride. Having said that, it can be a great ride.”

- Eric Adams

How they work together

If using a Google Cardboard, or any other VR headset the user is able to see the picture fully immersed. Therefore combining VR and 3600 video, you can create a universe where you are able to interact with touch points overlayed onto your 3600 video.
