The table below describes the characteristics of the individual storms. Included are data on the storms overall and on the landfalls of each. The colors are associated with the Saffir-Simpson scale of hurricane intensities, and are summarized in the table on the right side of this paragraph. (To see a brief description of how an intensity is defined, just place your cursor on the the appropriate element of the right-hand table.)

• The leftmost 6 columns are color coded by storm strength at maximum intensity.
• The next 3 columns are color coded based on intensity at each landfall. (If there is no landfall, a dark lavender is used to denote this.)
• For the last two columns (damage and deaths), the greatest landfalling intensity (if any) is used.

[Note that even a non-landfalling storm can cause deaths and damage. Tropical cyclones are not point events. Storm related wind, rain and rough surf can be present hundreds of miles away from the center (although the greatest likelihood of storm-related damage and deaths occurs for landfalling storms and at landfall)].

Entries which are bolded are records for the Atlantic basin.

Note that this table is current only through Hurricane Epsilon. Any additional storms that may form will be added after the National Hurricane Center ceases to issue advisories on that storm.

a: Achieved by hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma.

b: Achieved by Wilma on 19 October 2005.

c: Total damage is still a very uncertain number.

d: The toll outside of parentheses includes deaths which had been attributed to Hurricane Stan, but the NHC has asserted that many of the deaths are more attributable to a larger weather pattern instead of Stan itself and estimated 100 deaths from Stan pending its Tropical Cyclone Report.
