Global Mobility

Definition

"Global mobility refers to the movement by individuals across national, regional, cultural, or linguistic boundaries and has a profound impact on organizations’ ability to provide service to users and consumers today."[1]

In the area of management theories, Global Mobility refers to physical international mobility for work purposes. Global mobility theories addresses the movements of a range of globally mobile individuals ranging from business expatriates to more recently recognized groups, such as self-initiated expatriates and international business travelers. [2] Global Mobility reflects the development in the corporate world, where movement of people across national borders is becoming increasingly common Different disciplines view global human mobility in their own way. However, they do share a common understanding of global mobility as associated with human movements to a foreign country. Traditionally, this has been described in terms of push and pull-forces that drive immigrant labor from less developed countries to more developed countries. Not all global mobility is an outward movement. An increasing number of individuals return to their country of origin. This includes a return movement or repatriation of internationally relocated individuals such as immigrants, refugees, sojourners, retirees, military personnel, international students, or expatriates. [3]

Current Significance

Every period of world economic development has spawned its own system of large-scale global mobility. Colonization, wars, famine, slavery, and mercantile activities have all compelled large segments of populations to move from one country to another. In 2010, it is estimated that 215 million people lived outside their home country. People who engage in mobility movements are not only important human resources for organizations and countries as "repositories of knowledge", but can also be thought to influence interstate relationships concerning politics, economics and culture. Because of this, global mobility research is of high relevance for policies on human mobility, for both host and home countries. The concept of Global Mobility and related management research has recently gained a unique opportunity for exposure to a larger scientific audience and to get widely recognized as a serious domain of academic research. The Journal of Global Mobility: The home of expatriate management research was launched in 2013 which specializes in global mobility and related subjects such as expatriation. ."[4]

Future Trends and Applications

As businesses and institutions are continually increasing their efforts of utilizing globalization, and work will increasingly be undertaken on a global scale, the concept of Global Mobility will henceforth assume ever more significance in management studies. From predominantly being focused on longer-term and assigned expatriation occurring within an organization, global mobility research is increasingly expending efforts to discover the drivers and dynamics of a range of new alternative forms of global mobility.
