De første spor efter Ediacara-faunaen er omtrent 600 millioner år gamle, men blomstrede først rigtigt op i en periode kaldet den Avalonske eksplosion (575 millioner år siden), der fulgte kort efter en voldsom [[Cryogenium|kuldeperiode]], der praktisk taget havde [[Sneboldjord|dækket hele jordkloden med is]].
